Yes, traditional SEO Audits are being replaced with AI-Forward SEO Audits.
With the introduction of AI to search, the target in SEO work has shifted from trying to get listed on the first page of the search results to getting cited, featured, or mentioned in Google’s AI Overviews. Consequently, the SEO bots have shifted their evaluation criteria, and that in turn, has caused a shift in the SEO Auditor’s focus and tasks.
Here’s a summary of what’s changed in SEO Audits now that AI is part of the mix.
| Feature | Traditional SEO Audit | AI-Forward SEO Audit |
| Primary Goal | Rank on Page 1 of SERPs | Inclusion in AI Overviews and LLM training sets |
| Core Metric | Keyword Density & Search Volume | Entity Density & Relationship Logic |
| Content Structure | Optimized for readability and “keywords in headers” | Optimized for Entity Validation and “Answer Engine” clarity |
| Authority Signal | Backlinks from high-traffic sites | E-E-A-T Anchors and professional “neighborhood” associations |
| Internal Linking | Navigational flow and PageRank distribution | Contextual Mapping—connecting the Entity to its Attributes |
AI-Forward SEO Audits shift the focus from recognizing keywords to evaluating how clearly an article’s structure signals a connection between an Entity– that’s “real-life things” like Karen Callahan (replace with “Your Name”)- and pairing that with their Attributes (their expertise).
The auditor is looking to see that the content is essentially “connecting the dots” for the AI bots. In the eyes of an AI bot, ‘Karen Callahan‘ is the Entity. ‘WordPress Expert‘ is one Attribute. Other attributes would be “WordPress Developer”, “AI SEO Educator”, “Host of WordCamps”, “29 years in Digital Marketing”, and so on.
What are the AI SEO Bots doing?
The AI bots make these entity-attribute matches by performing Relationship Mapping.
Technically, relationship mapping is the background process where the LLMs “mosh” the nouns in your content to build a conceptual map. (LLMs are the software tools that assemble words into a map of “conceptual knowledge“.)
In layperson terms; a bot identifies the “links” between you (The Entity) and your expertise (The Attributes). For example, in the eyes of the AI now:
“Karen Callahan is connected to “WordPress Development” because she mentions “Enfold” and “PHP hooks.” She is a “Source of Truth” because she provides verified data on “AI SEO Audits.”
To visualize this relationship mapping, I like to imagine a very simple graph of how a “map” might look (at any point during its construction). Here’s what it might look like when connecting the dots about (the Entity) “Oprah Winfrey”.

With AI-Forward SEO we’ve moved from mere recognition to a level of “understanding”.
This change in SEO bot behavior has caused an evolution in the SEO Auditor’s behavior.
What is the SEO Auditor doing?
In an AI-Forward audit, the human auditor is looking to see that our content is essentially “connecting the dots” for the AI bots. In the eyes of an AI bot, ‘Karen Callahan‘ is the Entity—the unique person behind the screen. ‘WordPress Expert‘ is one Attribute. Other attributes would be “WordPress Developer”, “AI SEO Educator”, “Co-Host of of WordCamps”, “29 years in Digital Marketing”, and so on.
An SEO auditor acts as a Quality Control Inspector, and, nowadays SEO auditors perform Entity Validation in a quest to Identify you as the Authority source of Truth.
The auditor now looks for proof that the AI understands your position within your niche and trusts you as the primary source for specific answers.
Auditors review our websites to ensure that the words we use provide the clear signals AI needs to understand exactly who we are, what we do, and who we serve. They evaluate:
- Identity Consistency: Is “Karen Callahan” (substitute your name) clearly the same entity across the “About” page, the blog, and all professional bios?
- Signal Strength: Are my headers and summary blocks providing a clear, logical blueprint (that helps the bots connect the dots)?
- Credibility Anchors: Does the content link to recognized industry entities (like WordCamp) or established subject matter experts (like Neil Patel) who anchor my authority by placing me in the right professional “neighborhood”?
An auditor will look for attributes that build E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). Why is that important to remember? Because “Daughter”, “Book Lover”, and “Poker Enthusiast” are also attributes of Karen Callahan, however, those aren’t the “links” AI needs to map my expertise to the business clientele I want to serve. To reach that audience, I must be intentional with the signals I send.
What connections would you make for the AI bots?
“Your Name” is the Entity—and your primary Attribute would be “blogger” or “content provider” or “digital marketing expert” or “videographer”, etc.). What are your secondary Attributes?
What do we do to get included in the AI Overviews and the LLMs?
As content writers, we are in charge of conveying the connections in a way that the AI bots understand.
How do we format our content and construct our blog articles so that the AI bots immediately understand and feed those connections into the LLMs?
We study the Evolution of SEO Audits chart above, especially the “AI-Forward SEO Audit” column. We see that we need:
- consistency across all platforms,
- the correct physical formatting of our content
- to cleverly use our words to connect the dots for the AI SEO bots with regard to who we are, what we do, who we serve, and, where
I’ve compiled a list of five AI-forward actions that bloggers, content writers, and professionals managing their own websites can take to make their content more AI-attractive. It’s available in two formats:
- 5 Simple Actions to get your blog post cited in AI Overviews, a quick slideshow on Instagram,
- How to Optimize Your Articles for AI Citations, a deeper dive into the five actions, in my blog
After reviewing those, you’ll see that we are still updating the same components, however our intent—the effect we are actually looking for—has shifted.
So, as producers of content, there’s no new items for us to learn, however, there is a new way to think about how to present our info.
Our mind shift is to think about how the AI bots can connect the dots. How do we gracefully create the “links” in our content to make it easy for bots to make those entity-attribute connections?

To help you visualize the shift, here is a breakdown of how the “old” rules of SEO are evolving into “AI-Forward” strategies:
| Audit Component | Traditional SEO (recognition) | AI-Forward SEO (Understanding) |
| Keywords | Stuffing exact keyword phrases into text | Using Entity-dense language (Naming specific people, places, and things) |
| Headers (h2,h3,h4) | Using catchy or “clever” titles | Using headers that signal a clear intent or answer a specific question |
| First Paragraph | A slow “hook” to get readers interested | A high-density Summary Block that an AI bot can easily extract |
| Internal Linking | Linking to pages to pass “link juice” | Linking to related topics to build a Topic Cluster (proving you are an expert) |
| Content Body Formatting | Large blocks of text | Using Lists and Tables to provide structured data sets for the LLMs |
How important is structuring content for AI bots?
Structuring content for the AI bots is everything!
Digital Marketing expert, Neil Patel, emphasizes the importance of structuring your content in this video.
He explains that businesses (brands) do not get included in the LLMs (i.e. chatGPT, Gemini, Claude, LLama, Mistral),
“…not because the content is bad, because it is unextractable.“
Intentionally structuring your blog posts and page content can help the bots make those entity-attribute connections and pull a sentence or two for the LLMs to publish.
Oh, I know you’re not smiling. Feels like more work. But the work is training our brains to create a new habit when we add content to our websites-which we are doing anyway. Nowadays, in addition to formatting our thoughts about our topic, we need to conceive interesting and effective presentations of our ideas. Feeling resistant? Try James Clear’s “habit stacking” advice!
I have confidence in you and believe you’ll be structuring your blog posts in an AI-attractive way without a second thought in no time!
